Attangyeru at Thirumandhamkunnu
Attangayeru commemorates the fierce battle between the Bhoothaganas (spirit hosts) of Goddess Bhadrakali and the disciples of the sage-king Mandhatha. According to legend, Mandhatha carried a Shiva Lingam from Mount Kailasa to Thirumandhamkunnu. Goddess Parvathy sent Bhadrakali and her hosts to bring it back, and a great battle followed on the hill.
To re-enact this battle, devotees divide into two groups and throw Attanga, a wild fruit from a tree that grows in the temple grounds, at each other. This rare ritual is held every year on Thulam Vavu (the new moon day in the Malayalam month of Thulam). It takes place in the forenoon, before the Pantheeradi Pooja.
