Cheerakkuzhi Shashti
The Cheerakuzhy Shashti Maholsavam is the annual festival and installation day (Prathishta Dinam) celebrated at the Sree Subrahmanya Swami Temple in Cheerakuzhy.
The Desam Processions (Kavadi Varavu): The core attraction of the festival features vibrant Kavadiyattam and traditional processions originating from the 7 local regions (desams). Devotees carry beautifully decorated Kavadis while dancing to energetic percussion music.
Melam and Panchavadyam: The grand processions are accompanied by traditional Kerala temple ensembles, including the powerful beats of the Panchari Melam and the rhythmic strings and drums of Panchavadyam.
Elephant Pageantry (Gaja Veethika): Caparisoned elephants carrying the deity's thidambu (sacred replica) are a major visual highlight of the grand afternoon and evening celebrations. [1]
Religious Rituals: The temple priests perform special poojas, including Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja, Abhishekam (sacred bathing of the idol), and Deeparadhana in the evening. Devotees also observe strict Shashti Vratam (fasting) to seek the blessings of Lord Murugan.
Cultural Programs: Late evening and night events often include traditional art forms, music concerts, and cinematic dance performances staged by various local committees.
